Palm Springs Dress

I made this dress a couple of months ago while we already had plans to go to Palm Springs for Christmas. My hope was that at least there it would be warm enough to wear a dress without leggins or Jeans underneath - something that is almost impossible in San Francisco, even in summer and fall! I drafted the pattern myself following the instructions in Pattern magic, an absolutely gorgeous Japanese sewing book (it comes in two volumes, see below). I love the simple and plain yet sophisticated aesthetics of everything Japanese, be it fashion, interior design or comics. San Francisco has a Kinokuniya bookstore in Japantown and I like to browse in their books and magazines even though most of them are in Japanese with only the titels in English. The sewing books usually have pictures and illustrations that are pretty clear, therefore it's possible to figure out the patterns without being able to read Japanese :-).

Dieses Kleid habe ich bereits im Herbst genäht, schon mit dem Plan im Hinterkopf, dass wir Weihnachten in Palm Springs verbringen werden und es dort hoffentlich noch warm genug dafür sein würde. Den Schnitt habe ich selber gezeichnet nach einer Anleitung in Pattern Magic, einem japanischen Buch mit abenteuerlichsten Schnittkonstruktionen. Mir gefällt die japanische Ästhetik mit ihren schlichten und klaren Formen. Es gibt hier in San Francisco eine japanische Buchhandlung mit absolut tollen Büchern, von Kochen über Innendesign bis eben zu Nähen und Stricken. Der Vorteil bei den Nähbüchern ist, dass die Bilder und Skizzen meist sehr klar sind und es somit nicht schlimm ist, dass man vom japanischen Text nichts lesen kann :-) An Strick- und Kochbücher habe ich mich aber bisher noch nicht gewagt...
